Mutsuko K. Sasaki

Japanese

Mutsuko K. Sasaki (佐々木睦子) is a Japanese computer artist who worked at RIKEN's Information Science Laboratory in Wako, Saitama. From the mid-1970s she developed, with her co-author Tateaki Sasaki, the ART series of picture-generating systems: ART-3 (Artistic Realistic Technician #3, 1978) for black-and-white plotter drawings and the colour ART-4. They combine hand-drawn outlines of ducks, butterflies, flowers and Mount Fuji with backgrounds filled by "functional pattern brushes" whose marks are controlled by mathematical functions, which she called the function method. Her pictures and papers appeared on the cover of Computers and People (Hello Sunflowers!, April 1976), in Creative Computing (Computers and Beauty, November–December 1976, whose cover was also theirs), the Fourteenth Annual Computer Art Exposition in Computers and People (Nemophila, August 1976, credited as Mutsuko Kunii Sasaki), Computer Graphics and Art (1977–78), Computers and People again (1981), the 23rd Programming Symposium (An Attempt at Handling Beauty by Computer, 1982), Springer's Picture Engineering (1982) and The Visual Computer (1986), RIKEN News (Computer Art, 1987) and Forma (1991); she continued to publish on computer art through the IPSJ Graphics and CAD group (1992–93) and the Society for Science on Form (2004).
