Daniela Kröhnert

Daniela Kröhnert is a combination I admire enormously: punk-rock independence, hardcore academic, and experimental artist pioneering new approaches to color — I just wish we lived closer. A Vienna-based architect and researcher who makes art under the name DARK, she trained at Karlsruhe and then the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Studio Prix, with distinction), and teaches digital design and fabrication at the Angewandte, where she runs the Institute of Architecture's digital production lab. Her art practice runs on machines she built and pens she hacks: CMYK ink drawings of butterflies, nebulae, and other scientific imagery, generated in Rhino and Grasshopper and plotted line by line — including on the AxiDraw-style plotter she built during Austria's first pandemic lockdown. Because the pens wear down as they draw, no two plots of the same image come out alike, and her commitment to exploring what CMYK plotting can do is next level.
