Kamran Moojedi

Kamran Moojedi is a California computer artist who appeared in SIGGRAPH art shows from 1989 to 2003 — a stereolithograph in '89, a print in '90, and finally the Stephen Hawking Portrait — and then, as far as the public record goes, vanished. The collection now holds his ca.-1988 Van Gogh pair — unique plotter drawings on kraft paper shown in "Artist's Images: Images of Artists by Artists" (Security Pacific Gallery, Los Angeles, and the Nevada Institute of Contemporary Art, Reno, 1988) — alongside the Hawking; I love how the character of his subjects shines through the abstraction. His method, in his own SIGGRAPH statement: portraits built from more than a hundred layered drawings in a line style "that could not be executed without the assistance of a computer," choosing "cultural icons who have struggled with their own duality." The V&A holds a lithograph of the Hawking portrait, given through the collection of Patric Prince, stamped with the artist's fingerprint.
