The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: 『最上川丸ごと体験ミュージアムプロジェクト実施報告書』 (Report on the Mogami River Whole-River Experience Museum Project), 美しい山形・最上川フォーラム, March 2006, pp. 4–8 — the complete text of chapter 1. Dated: Report dated March 2006.. Written for a Mogami River museum project report, these five pages compress Hayama's media theory for people who build things for children. He starts from etymology: "development" carries the sense of removing what wraps (cf. envelopment), so to develop is to open what was enveloped and unknown — which maps onto the process by which what the genes hold as possibility is realised, or lost, in encounters with the environment. Self-development media are those a person turns on themself; he concentrates on children because the neural connections that carry a life are laid down by about age three. Its basic function is an interface (接触機能界面) between human genes and the genes of culture (文化の遺伝子). Children raised out of contact with cultural genes, he argues, become adults whose social communication breaks down, so closing that gap is a task of the age. To work it must attract, and he unpacks the word interest — interest, concern and profit in one word — as a gravitational field: a 知のアリジゴク, an antlion pit of knowledge whose funnel draws a child to the centre, and which is really a heaven, since the child returning with pleasure absorbs the genome of knowledge unawares. The old museum, deterministic and one-way, he declares expired; media have moved to responsiveness and to access-side initiative (アクセス側の主体性). The rest sets conditions. A system must be designed around its 目標者, its "target person" — here the child, in a care home the resident, in government the citizen — never sacrificed to the institution's convenience. Learning should be heuristic, each hypothesis laying down neural connections that persist, against drilled single-answer teaching, which yields one routine only. He returns to Latin educo, to draw out, and defines the productivity of learning as grasping the same content with less burden — in his view the real meaning of 学力. The goal image is an intelligence medium that turns the cerebrum inside out to wrap humanity, as a glove is the inverse cast of a hand. Contents as the document gives them: 第1節 子どもの自己開発メディア (Self-development media for children) · 第2節 子どもの自己開発メディアの基本的機能 — (1)人間の遺伝子と文化の遺伝子の接触機能界面(interface) (Basic function: the contact interface between human genes and the genes of culture) · 第3節 留意すること — (1)目標者の概念 (2)主体性の尊重 問題解決の長い道のりの始まり (Things to bear in mind: the concept of the target person; respect for initiative) · 第4節 自己開発 そのメカニスム — (1)発見的問題解決のプロセスと自己組織化 (2)H.R.D.(Human Resource/s Development 人間内の埋蔵された資源の開発) (3)学習の生産性 構造化能力 大脳の励起 (Self-development and its mechanism) · 第5節 システムの要件 (Requirements of the system) · 第6節 ゴール像 (The goal image) · 第7節 おわりに (In closing). Noted: No person is named anywhere in the text, so the people list is empty. The transcription contains character-recognition slips — 「遣伝子」 for 遺伝子, 「侯たれる」 for 俟たれる, 「慟く」 for 働く, 「漏斗」 rendered 「漏⽃」 — which I have read as intended. Section 2 is numbered with a single item "(1)" and no "(2)"; this is as printed.
