From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9951 in the 執筆記事 (articles) category, registered 2022-10-04: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9951. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: 『音楽案内』 (Ongaku Annai), June 1962, published by the Japan Musicians' Club (日本音楽家クラブ), pp. 22–23. Dated: June 1962. A short self-portrait written for the magazine Ongaku Annai in the month of his own works concert. Hayama begins by admitting how little he has written: counting from his student days at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and including the three new pieces in the concert, he has only seven works. The others are exercises, unfinished large designs, and finished pieces he deliberately suppressed, all of which have in one way or another been absorbed into other works, and he expects the same of some that remain. Spreading these old papers out again to write the piece, he reflects on what he has consistently wanted from music over these not inconsiderable years. The essay is the plainest statement in the archive of his attitude to his own composition in the period between the Paris years and the turn to computer media a decade later.
