Notes

From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9960 in the コンピュータアート category, registered 2022-10-04: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9960. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: Printed two-sided leaflet; 3 pp. in the scan, of which p. 1 is a cropped detail of the front.. Dated: 1 October (Saturday) to 10 October (Monday) 1977, 11:00–19:00.. The archive publishes this item as 3 separate page scans rather than as a PDF; the download here was assembled from those scans in page order, each taken at the higher of the two resolutions the archive serves. The front of the leaflet announces '77国際コンピュータ・アート展 / INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER ARTS EXHIBITION '77, held as part of the Information Week (情報化週間) of Shōwa 52 under the theme メディアラマ / MEDIA RAMA. The organiser is the Japan Information Processing Development Association; planning and production are by Computer Age Co.; the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications are named as supporters and Sony Kigyō as sponsor. Four categories of entry are listed: visual and auditory works (graphics, moving image, music and sound, three-dimensional work); system works (visual, auditory, control and mixed media, participation by program); research works; and idea works. The exhibition ran 1–10 October 1977, 11:00–19:00, on the eighth floor of the Sony Building in Ginza, admission ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for students and children, with the secretariat housed at Computer Age Co. in the Kasumigaseki Building. The reverse explains the title. "メディアラマ" is glossed as meaning something like a new panorama of the media of human expression, art included. More than ten years, it says, have passed since computers and other media began to stand in relation to one another, and this year's exhibition will show not only works in various genres made with computers but also works that, without a computer, have a relation to mathematics, science and technology — moving sculpture driven by mechanical devices, image works on video, geometric paintings built from mathematical patterns. Rather than only displaying works, it promises several devices and media the audience can actually operate, so that visitors take part in the exhibition themselves. The stated purpose is to make a place where human beings and media can become friends through artistic activity. The front is given over to a large optical design: close-set vertical lines that bend into nested arcs, producing a moiré across the whole sheet. Contents as the document gives them: テーマ:メディアラマ MEDIA RAMA · 出展内容:視覚的・聴覚的作品/システム作品/研究作品/アイデア作品 · 期間/場所/入場料 · 企画のねらい (aim of the exhibition, on the reverse). Noted: Neither Hayama nor the Computer Art Center is named anywhere on the leaflet; the connection to him rests on its presence in the 端山文庫 and on the archive's cataloguing. No designer is credited for the cover pattern. PDF page 1 is a cropped detail of page 2 rather than a separate document.
