From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9887 in the 講演・講義 category, registered 2022-10-02: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9887. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: A one-page PDF standing in for a video record published on YouTube (https://youtu.be/P7xzoaigrmw). The page carries a single frame — Hayama at a table before a whiteboard on which are written 「端山貢明さん」, 「メシアン」, 「個の主体性」 and "public" — captioned 「端山貢明さんと学生の対話 2009/07/27長野大学にて」.. Dated: recorded 27 July 2009. The archive publishes this item as 1 separate page scan rather than as a PDF; the download here was assembled from those scans in page order, each taken at the higher of the two resolutions the archive serves. Another catalogue stand-in: a single video frame with its caption, standing for a recording made on 27 July 2009 when Hayama, then 77, was the guest of Maekawa Michihiro's project-research seminar in the Faculty of Business and Informatics at Nagano University. The whiteboard visible in the frame carries the evening's armature — his name, Messiaen, 「個の主体性」 (the agency of the individual) and the English word "public" — which is a fair summary of the ground he covers. He begins, the archive records, not with his subject but with two words. What is a project — pro/ject, a throwing-forward? What is information — in/ex, formation? The students take a long time to follow him and he labours the explanation; questions and responses come only gradually, and it never quite becomes the dialogue the title promises. The point, in Maekawa's reading, is that Hayama is not delivering content but inviting the students into the act of asking what a thing is: understanding its concept, its structure, its principle. He opens by setting them the task of building an interactive information space in which the whole of humanity can think about what the whole of humanity needs, and then asks what it means for one student, inside "a contemporary society that holds together while the agency of the individual is respected", to undertake a piece of project research at all. The record matters here because it is one of the last documents of Hayama teaching, twelve years before his death, and because it shows the line he drew from his own training under Olivier Messiaen through to the agency of the access side. People named: 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei), 前川道博 (Maekawa Michihiro), オリヴィエ・メシアン (Olivier Messiaen). Noted: The PDF contains no transcript; the account of what was said rests entirely on Maekawa's note in the archive record, which is signed (前川). The running time is not stated. Messiaen's name appears on the whiteboard in the frame but nothing in the record says what was said about him.
