Notes
From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9865 in the コンピュータアート category, registered 2022-10-01: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9865. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: Unpublished working bundle from the 端山文庫 (Hayama Collection), originally held together with a double clip; 13 pp. of manuscript, several sheets on COMPUTER SALON letterhead (Kasumigaseki Building, 12F, room 1228, Tokyo).. Dated: Catalogued [1972]; the Fujitsu quotation bound into the bundle carries two approval seals dated Showa 49.4.2 and 49.4.8 (2 and 8 April 1974).. The archive publishes this item as 13 separate page scans rather than as a PDF; the download here was assembled from those scans in page order, each taken at the higher of the two resolutions the archive serves. A hand-written contents page sets out a prospectus in ten parts: statement of purpose; organisation chart; activity outline; research content; outline of the system to be installed; costs, split into founding investment and running costs; the state of research activity — "the pre-institute (Computer Art Center)", domestic, and overseas; a history of computer art; and appendices. The overseas institutions listed are IRCAM, Utrecht, Bell Telephone Laboratories, Xerox, the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Project, Illinois and SUNY Buffalo. A Fujitsu quotation addressed to "コンピュータアートセンタ 端山貢明殿" prices a FACOM U-200 installation at ¥34,570,000: the processor with 64 KB core memory at ¥15,910,000, plus typewriter, paper-tape reader-punch, X-Y plotter, character display (1,920 characters per screen), hard-copy unit, 2.4 MB disc, tape, card reader and punch. Three interface-control-unit options come to ¥17.5m, ¥19.5m and ¥19m, leased at 2.45, 2.85 or 3.6 per cent a month over five, four or three years. Hayama's own sheets add some ¥20,000,000 of audio and measuring equipment, including Ampex recorders and a Moog synthesizer at ¥10,000,000. The research-field sheets make 音響空間, acoustic space, the Center's core subject: basic study of sound as a sensory signal within the living body's information system and of "sound の空間性" (the spatiality of sound) as an approach to four-dimensional information; applied work giving organised sound to hotel, bank and hospital lobbies, salons and personal space, a more contemporary BGM, "architecture by sound", and acoustic design for reversed-phase buildings — John Portman's Hyatt Regency hotels in Atlanta and San Francisco, and the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building. Ring diagrams put basic research at the centre, circled by acoustic space, vision, logic systems and N-C machine tools, with game, decision and presentation systems around them. A final sheet headed "Visual" lists a colour analyser, image synthesizer, 16 mm camera and projector. Contents as the document gives them: 1. 趣意書 (statement of purpose) · 2. 組織表 (organisation chart) · 3. 活動概要表 (activity outline table) · 4. 研究内容 (research content): 4-1 研究分野 (research fields), 4-2 計画 (plan) · 5. 設置システム概略 (outline of the installed system) · 6. コンピュータアートの歴史と現況 (history and present state of computer art) · 9. 関係者、団体、機関、研究所リスト (lists of people, groups, institutions, laboratories): 9-1 国内, 9-2 海外 · 10. 別添資料 (appended material) · 基本システム (basic system diagram) · 測定器及びオーディオ機器 (measuring instruments and audio equipment) · 研究機関・海外 (overseas research institutions) · I. 音響空間 — 基礎研究 / 応用研究 (acoustic space — basic and applied research). People named: 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei), ジョン・ポートマン (John Portman), 河田 (Kawada — Fujitsu approval seal), 袴田 (Hakamada — Fujitsu approval seal). Noted: The archive dates the bundle [1972], but the Fujitsu quotation inside it is stamped Showa 49.4.2 and 49.4.8 (April 1974); either the bundle was assembled over time or the archive's year rests on cataloguing rather than on the papers. The 1972 attribution is the archive's, not the documents'. PDF page 1 is a cropped detail of the same sheet shown in full on page 2, and is cut off below item 6. Many pencil marginalia are faint or overwritten. On the research-fields bubble diagram one label reads 数理的な・・システム化 with a character scribbled over; the vertical pencil notes down the left edge of the 研究分野 draft (4-1-1) are largely illegible. Some furniture and sundry items on the budget sheet (p. 5) could not be read with confidence; the figure beside 音響電子システム及び測定器 reads 20,000,000 but the surrounding arithmetic is incomplete.
