Notes

From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9863 in the 略歴・業績 (career) category, registered 2022-10-01: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9863. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: Hayama Kōmei Archive Project; 2 pp., printable poster. Dated: issued 3 October 2022, the day the archive opened. The archive's own printable overview sheet, issued on the day it opened. It is built around a photograph of Hayama in his study, credited to Le Mars, and the banner line 現代の要請に基づく知識循環の創造, the creation of knowledge circulation as the present age demands it. Its subtitle frames his life as 作曲からネット・ムセイオンへ, from composition to Net Museion, and calls it the Copernican turn of a composer who took his revelation from Olivier Messiaen. The sheet explains the coinage at the centre of his late thought. Having moved from the creative work of composition to a search for a new media environment for knowledge, and having pursued the modern media character of computer media, Hayama named what he arrived at after the Museion, the social institution of knowledge in ancient Greece, and called it Net Museion (ネット・ムセイオン). A compact biography runs along the foot: born in Tokyo in 1932; the Viola Concerto of 1955, written while he was a student at the Tokyo University of the Arts, won the Minister of Education prize at the Art Festival; he went to France on a French government scholarship in 1957 and studied under Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire, returning in 1959; he continued to compose while turning his research to the computer as a medium of artistic expression and social communication. The dates it gives for the computer-art years differ slightly from the career document also in this library: here the Computer Art Center is founded in 1972 and the International Computer Art Exhibition is planned and run from 1972 to 1978, where the career document has the exhibition series beginning in 1973. It records the Social Dynamics Institute in 1974, names 《曲舞》 (Kusemai, 1978) as his last composition, has him appointed professor at Tohoku University of Art and Design in 1993 teaching information environment studies and contributing to regional informatisation in Yamagata, made emeritus professor in 2000, and dying in May 2021 at the age of 89. People named: 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei), オリヴィエ・メシアン (Olivier Messiaen). Noted: The exhibition series is dated 1972–1978 here but from 1973 in the career document (item 9849); the archive has not reconciled the two.
