Notes
From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 124964 in the コンピュータアート category, registered 2023-08-18: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=124964. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: Printed programme sheet with a separate (unused) invitation postcard; 4 scanned pages.. Dated: The programme gives 1980年1月30日(木); the invitation postcard bound with it gives 1980年1月31日(木). 31 January 1980 was the Thursday.. The archive publishes this item as 4 separate page scans rather than as a PDF; the download here was assembled from those scans in page order, each taken at the higher of the two resolutions the archive serves. A screening programme for the Computer Art Center's second anthology of computer images, held at 6:30 p.m. at the Science Hall of the Science Museum in Kitanomaru, with commentary by Hayama Kōmei. The Center is given as organiser, with the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences, the Japan Science Foundation, Computer Age Co. and Nikkei Science as supporters, and the Center's address as Minami-Aoyama 2-4-8, room 301 — a different address from the Kasumigaseki and Higashi-Gotanda ones on its early-1970s letterhead. Eighteen items were shown: Peter Foldes's La faim (1974), Herbert Franke's Rotationen, Alan Kitching's ANTICS, Tsukio Yoshio's 風雅の技法 of 1967, a CAC sample of 1969, a University of Utah halftone animation of 1972, James Blinn's Voyager 1, Voyager 2 and Pioneer 11 of 1979, Kenneth Knowlton's Chrystal growth (1978), flight and space-shuttle simulations by Evans & Sutherland (1977 and 1978), an NCAR simulation of convection, Tom DeFanti's Spiral 3 (1978), Phil Morton's Program No. 7 (1979), Tomislav Mikulic's Collage cake, a 1979 sample from the New York Institute of Technology and Ron Hays's Prelude. A boxed note announces a third anthology for October 1980 with Professor Garland Stern of NYIT as speaker. The invitation postcard bound with the programme is titled differently — コンピュータ・アニメーションのアンソロジー II part 2, an anthology of computer animation rather than of computer images — which suggests the title was changed shortly before the event. It names five works plus "a dozen or so others", gives the hall's telephone numbers and the nearest subway stop at Takebashi, and is otherwise an unused blank postcard. The list is a snapshot of what a Tokyo audience could be shown of international computer animation at the turn of the 1980s: NASA mission visualisation, flight simulation, video synthesis and the Chicago and NYIT schools side by side with a Japanese film of 1967. Contents as the document gives them: プログラム 1–18 (programme of eighteen films and tapes) · ご招待 / 上映作品 (invitation card with five named works). People named: 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei), Peter Foldes, Herbert Franke, Alan Kitching, 月尾嘉男 (Tsukio Yoshio), James Blinn, Kenneth Knowlton, Tom DeFanti, Phil Morton, Tomislav Mikulic, Ron Hays, Gerland Stern (printed thus; Garland Stern of NYIT). Noted: The programme and the invitation disagree about the date: 30 January against 31 January 1980, both called a Thursday. 31 January was the Thursday, so the programme sheet appears to be wrong, but the archive catalogues the event under 30 January. The two documents also carry different titles (コンピュータ・イメージ against コンピュータ・アニメーション); which was used on the night is not recorded here. "Gerland Stern" is printed thus; the NYIT animator was Garland Stern. No durations, formats or credits beyond the maker's name are given for any item, and several entries carry no year.
