Notes

From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9947 in the 音楽(演奏会) category, registered 2022-10-04: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9947. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: Japanese Society for Contemporary Music (日本現代音楽協会); Bridgestone Hall, Kyōbashi, Tokyo. Dated: Tuesday 6 December 1960, 6:30 p.m.. The archive publishes this item as 5 separate page scans rather than as a PDF; the download here was assembled from those scans in page order, each taken at the higher of the two resolutions the archive serves. The same thirtieth-anniversary programme book as item 9946, catalogued here for the premiere it records: Hayama's ピアノ ソナタ (Piano Sonata), second on the bill and marked 初演, played by Honjō Reiko. The sonata is in three movements — Allegro assai, Lento, Allegro — and this scan opens on the Japanese programme page that carries them. The concert was given by the Japanese Society for Contemporary Music at Bridgestone Hall in Kyōbashi, with the booklet directing audiences from the Yaesu exit of Tokyo Station or the Kyōbashi subway stop, and the cover printed in English as 'Concert of the works for chamber music, 30th aniversary of Japanese Society for Contemporary Music'. The sonata became the most durable of Hayama's works. It was taken up by his own piano teacher Yasukawa Kazuko in November 1962, by Endō Ikuko at the Exhibition of Contemporary Music '80, by Niimura Kazuko or Moriyama Kazuko at the Japan Chopin Society in July 1980, and by Nakagawa Ken'ichi at Tokyo Opera City in October 2022, sixty-two years after this premiere. The rest of the 1960 bill comprised Suzuki Tadashi's Prelude, Passacaglia and Fugue for string quartet (premiere), Shimoyama Hifumi's String Quartet No. 2, Ishida Ichirō's Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano, and Constantin Regamey's String Quartet, of which the second and third movements were given their Japanese premiere. A greeting signed by Abe Kōmei opens the booklet and an English programme page closes it. Contents as the document gives them: ごあいさつ (Greeting) — 安部幸明, on the society's thirtieth anniversary · I 鈴木匡:弦楽四重奏の為のプレリュード,パッサカリア,フーガ(初演)(Suzuki: Prelude, Passacaglia and Fugue for string quartet, premiere) — プレリュード—モデラート/パッサカリア—アンダンテ/フーガ—アレグロ; 安芸晶子, 今井信子, 水野郁子, 加藤仁士 · II 端山貢明:ピアノ ソナタ(初演)(Hayama: Piano Sonata, premiere) — アレグロ アッサイ/レント/アレグロ; ピアノ 本荘玲子 · III 下山一二三:弦楽四重奏曲 第二番 (Shimoyama: String Quartet No. 2) — プレリュードとフーガ/レチタティーヴォとアリア/ヴァリエイションとフィナーレ; 安芸晶子, 手束勝彦, 潮田益子, 千本博愛 · IV 石田一郎:ヴァイオリンとピアノの為のソナタ 第二番 (Ishida: Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano) — アレグロ モデラート/レント—アンダンテ—レント/アレグロ; 磯恒男, 神西敦子 · V コンスタンティン・レガメイ:弦楽四重奏曲(第二,第三楽章 本邦初演)(Regamey: String Quartet, Japanese premiere of the second and third movements) — アレグロ イムペテュオーゾ/レント モルト ソステヌート/アレグラメンテ · English programme page with romanised names. People named: 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei / Komei Hayama), 本荘玲子 (Honjō Reiko / Reiko Honsho, piano), 鈴木匡 (Suzuki Tadashi / Tadashi Suzuki, composer), 安芸晶子 (Aki Shoko, violin), 今井信子 (Imai Nobuko / Nobuko Imai, violin), 水野郁子 (Mizuno Ikuko / Ikuko Mizuno, viola), 加藤仁士 (Katō Hiroshi / Hiroshi Kato, cello), 下山一二三 (Shimoyama Hifumi / Hifumi Shimoyama, composer), 手束勝彦 (Tezuka Katsuhiko / Katsuhiko Tezuka, violin), 潮田益子 (Ushioda Masuko / Masuko Ushioda, viola), 千本博愛 (Chimoto Hirochika, cello), 石田一郎 (Ishida Ichirō / Ichiro Ishida, composer), 磯恒男 (Iso Tsuneo / Tsuneo Iso, violin), 神西敦子 (Jinzai Atsuko / Atsuko Jinzai, piano), コンスタンティン・レガメイ (Constantin Regamey, composer), 安部幸明 (Abe Kōmei, who signed the anniversary greeting). Noted: The English page gives the composer as 'Komei Hayama' and the pianist as 'Reiko Honsho'; other romanisations here follow that page where it supplies them (Shoko Aki, Hiroshi Kato, Hirochika Chimoto, Atsuko Jinzai) and are otherwise guesses from the characters. The booklet is headed the society's thirtieth anniversary; in the 1962 programme book Hayama recalls the occasion as the thirty-fifth anniversary. The printed programme has been followed. No premiere mark appears beside the Shimoyama or Ishida works; only the Suzuki and the Hayama are marked 初演, and the Regamey is marked a Japanese premiere of two movements. This PDF and item 9946 are two scans of the same five-page booklet; here the Japanese programme page appears twice, as pages 1 and 4.
