The programme booklet for an all-French evening of piano trios at the Maison Franco-Japonaise, presented with the Japanese-French Music Society under the French title Concert de musique de chambre française <1967>. The players were Hattori Toyoko (violin), Suzuki Akira (cello) and Yasukawa Kazuko (piano) — the pianist who had played Hayama's sonata four and a half years earlier and who had taught him the piano. Three works were given: Fauré's Trio in D minor op. 120, Roussel's Trio in C minor op. 2, marked 初演 / Première as a Japanese premiere, and Ravel's Trio in A minor. Hayama appears here not as a composer but as the author of the booklet's commentary, 「トリオについて」. He begins with the coincidence that each of the three wrote exactly one piano trio, and with the medium's oddity: three highly expressive solo instruments, but two of them strings of similar character carrying the showy part while the piano covers both their ranges, so that in sonata form one of the three cannot state the theme as a soloist. Fauré's, written the year before his death at seventy-eight, he calls a long song in trio form, a swan song written as though its author knew nothing of Stravinsky or Schoenberg outside. Roussel, who meant to be a sailor and entered d'Indy's class at twenty-nine, produced in his op. 2 a work denser and purer than the later symphonies. In Ravel's the piano has overwhelming primacy and is written almost as a concerto; if the opening chordal theme is taken lightly, as salon music, the work's worth is halved. Contents as the document gives them: I ガブリエル・フォーレ:ピアノ三重奏曲 作品120 ニ短調 (Fauré: Piano Trio in D minor, op. 120) · II アルベール・ルーセル:ピアノ三重奏曲 作品2 ハ短調(初演)(Roussel: Piano Trio in C minor, op. 2 — Japanese premiere) · III モーリス・ラヴェル:ピアノ三重奏曲 イ短調 (Ravel: Piano Trio in A minor) · トリオについて 端山貢明 ('On the trio', Hayama Kōmei) · Cover with the performers' names in French; Yamaha advertisement on the back cover.
