From the 端山貢明アーカイブ (Hayama Kōmei Archive), item 9957 in the 音楽(演奏会) category, registered 2022-10-04: https://d-commons.net/hayama/?c=&p=9957. Published by the 端山貢明アーカイブプロジェクト (Hayama Kōmei Archive Project), directed by 前川道博 (Michihiro Maekawa) of Nagano University, on the D-Commons platform, and licensed CC BY (表示). The source documents come from the 端山文庫, the papers kept in Hayama's laboratory at Tohoku University of Art and Design, digitised by the project with the agreement of his family; his autograph scores were given to the University History Archives of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2026. Source: 新東京室内楽団 (New Tokyo Chamber Ensemble), fifth concert, 'An evening of contemporary music — Japanese premieres'; Dai-ichi Seimei Hall, Tokyo; members' tickets ¥350; management Nihon Concert Kyōkai. Dated: Friday 1 February 1963, 6:30 p.m.. The archive publishes this item as 1 separate page scan rather than as a PDF; the download here was assembled from those scans in page order, each taken at the higher of the two resolutions the archive serves. A single-sheet handbill for the fifth concert of the New Tokyo Chamber Ensemble, billed as 現代音楽の夕べ ―本邦初演― ('An evening of contemporary music — Japanese premieres'), at the Dai-ichi Seimei Hall. Three works were played: Honegger's Concerto da camera for flute, cor anglais and strings, with Noguchi Ryū and Iguchi Hiroyuki; Hayama's 弦楽合奏のための交響曲 (Symphony for string orchestra); and Hindemith's Theme and Four Variations, with Kōshima Teruji at the piano. The conductors are given as Akahori Fumio and Hayama Kōmei, so Hayama directed on this occasion — the only document in this group that shows him conducting. The symphony is otherwise unrecorded in these papers, and the handbill supplies no movement titles, duration or composition date. The subtitle 本邦初演 is applied to the evening as a whole rather than to any single item, and no work carries an individual 初演 mark, so the archive's reading of the Hayama symphony as a premiere cannot be confirmed from the sheet itself; the Honegger and the Hindemith were both well established abroad by 1963, which makes the billing most naturally a claim about them. The concert falls between Hayama's own composer portrait concert of June 1962 and the long turn towards computer media that began at the end of the decade. Contents as the document gives them: 小協奏曲(フルート、コールアングレと弦楽合奏のための)— オネッゲル (Honegger: Concerto da camera for flute, cor anglais and strings): フルート 野口竜、コールアングレ 井口博之 · 弦楽合奏のための交響曲 — 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei: Symphony for string orchestra) · テーマと四つの変奏曲 — ヒンデミット (Hindemith: Theme and Four Variations): ピアノ 幸島輝治 · 指揮 赤堀文雄、端山貢明 (Conductors: Akahori Fumio and Hayama Kōmei). People named: 端山貢明 (Hayama Kōmei, composer and co-conductor), 赤堀文雄 (Akahori Fumio, conductor), 野口竜 (Noguchi Ryū, flute), 井口博之 (Iguchi Hiroyuki, cor anglais), 幸島輝治 (Kōshima Teruji — reading uncertain, piano), オネゲル (Arthur Honegger), ヒンデミット (Paul Hindemith). Noted: The handbill names the ensemble 新東京室内楽団; the archive's title calls it 新東京室内管弦楽団. No individual work is marked 初演; the words 本邦初演 appear only in the evening's subtitle, so the archive's description of Hayama's symphony as a premiere is not borne out by the sheet. The pianist's name, printed small, reads 幸島輝治; the romanisation Kōshima Teruji is a guess from the characters. The handbill does not say which conductor took which work.
