My daughter Nika, in profile in a striped shirt — half of stage one of the family portraits, commissioned in 2017 alongside mine. Sanchez draws these in colored ballpoint pen on archival paper, layering strokes until the color does things ballpoint shouldn't be able to do; nobody believes it until they lean in close. Everyone in the family portraits is wearing stripes.
