Nicolas V. Sanchez draws with ballpoint pens — including the NS1, a pen he designed himself — and gets color and depth out of them that shouldn't be possible. My friend Alexis introduced me to his work, and we did our family portraits in two stages. I like that we're each wearing stripes, and his portrait of Merlin is next level; nobody believes these are ballpoint pen drawings until they get close up. Sanchez earned his BFA at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids and his MFA at the New York Academy of Art, where he received the post-graduate fellowship, and he has done residencies in China, the Dominican Republic, Venice, and Parma. His work has appeared in VOGUE Italia, Vanity Fair, and New York Magazine, and he showed in Venice during the 2015 Biennale. He lives and works in New York City.
