Two birds perch on a pine branch, drawn in thousands of tiny plotted marks in a single pale lavender ink. Derrick Schultz made this in 2017, when he was driving a vintage pen plotter with his own code — the same period as the generative valentines project Vice wrote about. The whole image is one continuous field of dot-and-wave patterning that ripples out around the birds like water: from across the room it's a soft picture of two birds, and up close it falls apart into pure pattern. Schultz later became one of the best-known teachers of machine-learning art through his Artificial Images classes; these plots are a record of where that eye started.
