Derrick Schultz

Derrick Schultz has had two artistic lives so far. In the mid-2010s he was hand-feeding vintage pen plotters with his own code — generative valentines that Vice wrote up, and quiet dot-field drawings like the two bird plots in this collection. He puts work out on his own site, and more than once I got a piece by donating to a non-profit of his choosing, which tells you something about him. We've crossed paths a few times over the years, including at a workshop he was running in Aspen. Since 2019 he has become one of the best-known teachers of machine-learning art: his Artificial Images classes on StyleGAN and diffusion models have taught thousands of artists and designers, he teaches at NYU's ITP, and he has made work for the New York Times (where he was also a product designer), HP, and Acne Studios. His prints and classes live under the name BustBright.
