Steve Purtee

Steven Purtee spent three decades painting other people's pictures enormous: a Broadway and film scenic artist (Hairspray, Jersey Boys, The Book of Mormon; A League of Their Own, You've Got Mail) trained at Yale School of Drama after a Wright State BFA. Retired to Peekskill, he paints his own now — oil, encaustic, and pastel still lifes with sculptural depth — and runs the Outside the Line Collective, exquisite-corpse collaborations with fellow scenic artists. His Evening Pomegranates took fourth place at the International Society of Experimental Artists' 2025 annual.
