Lejaren Hiller
1924–1994
Lejaren Hiller (1924–1994) came to music from chemistry — a Princeton PhD and DuPont research chemist who had studied composition with Sessions and Babbitt. His Illiac Suite (with Leonard Isaacson, completed 1957 on the University of Illinois's ILLIAC I) is the first substantial work of computer-based algorithmic composition. He founded Illinois's Experimental Music Studios in 1958, co-created the MUSICOMP language, collaborated with John Cage on HPSCHD (1969), and moved to SUNY Buffalo in 1968.
