Keith Haring

American · 1958–1990

Keith Haring (1958–1990) drew a visual language the whole world learned in about five years flat: the radiant baby, the barking dog, the dancing figures — born in hundreds of white-chalk drawings on blank black subway ad panels between 1980 and 1985, sometimes forty a day. Reading, Pennsylvania to the School of Visual Arts to the center of downtown New York; the Shafrazi Gallery breakout in 1982; the Pop Shop and Crack Is Wack in 1986. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he founded the Keith Haring Foundation the next year and died at thirty-one, having already given his images away to everyone.
