Jenn Karson is a Vermont artist and researcher whose combination of AI, research, academia, and ecology makes her work rise above any single category — and a good friend who comes to workshops and collaborative events. I plotted the works for her first show, and her work was on the cover of the first issue of Machine Arts magazine. She took her BA at the University of Vermont and an MFA on full fellowship at the San Francisco Art Institute; before any of this she trained as a classical singer and fronted the Burlington bands Zola Turn and Bad Ju Ju. She co-founded Vermont Makers, ran UVM's FabLab for a decade (2014–2024), and in 2020 founded its Plant Machine Design Group — the research engine behind the Damaged Leaf Dataset and the phytomechatronics framework that runs through her recent plotting.
