James Cook draws with typewriters. The British artist — Braintree, Essex, born in the mid-1990s, trained in architecture — has been making pictures one keystroke at a time since March 2014, when he was seventeen, and now works from a studio at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London surrounded by more than a hundred machines. He travels with a typewriter in his backpack, which airport security x-rays greet with predictable suspicion, and has typed his way through New York, Las Vegas, Taiwan, and Maastricht (drawing André Rieu); Tom Hanks, patron saint of typewriter people, owns a signed portrait. His Ten Years Typing retrospective ran at theprintspace in London in 2024.
