Iannis Xenakis
1922–2001
Iannis Xenakis (born Braïla, Romania, 1922, of Greek parents) was a composer and architect. He fought in the Greek Resistance, graduated in engineering in 1947, then studied composition in Paris under Honegger, Milhaud and Messiaen while working twelve years with Le Corbusier (designing the Philips Pavilion at Expo '58). From 1953 he pioneered 'stochastic music' using probability and, later, game and set theory, founding the Centre for Mathematical and Automated Music (CMAM). A contributor to Jasia Reichardt's Cybernetics, Art and Ideas (1971).
