Copper Giloth

Copper Giloth was the first person — and first woman — to graduate from the Electronic Visualization Laboratory's MFA program at the University of Illinois Chicago (1980), and she promptly built the infrastructure the field needed: after serving on the 1981 Computer Culture Art Show committee, she chaired the first two international juried ACM SIGGRAPH Art Shows (1982 and 1983), the second of which traveled to some thirty venues worldwide — SIGGRAPH gave her its Outstanding Service Award in 2000. Her own work ran from early plotter prints (the DES series, 1980–81) to video shown at MoMA in 1982; she taught digital media at UMass Amherst from 1985, retiring as professor emerita, and the institutional revival found her again in 2025 with LACMA's Digital Witness and a first New York solo at Microscope Gallery.
