Description
Charles Mattox (American, b. 1910), Irregular Pentagon, 1970. Lithograph on Crisbrook waterleaf paper, 16 × 20 in. Signed and numbered 7/20 in pencil, with the Tamarind workshop blindstamp and printer's chop at lower left. Printed by John Sommers, July 10–13, 1970; Tamarind catalogue no. 70-106.
A rounded, asymmetric form built as a curve of constant width on an irregular pentagon — a construction Mattox returned to often in this period — encloses a faceted, star-like arrangement of black triangular planes, set above a band of dense, wavy linear texture suggesting water or terrain. The print exemplifies the hard-edge geometric abstraction and interest in mathematical form that defined Mattox's work during his Tamarind fellowship years.
