Description
By the time of this drawing, Beyls had spent more than three decades building generative systems for visual art and music, moving from early rule-based programs toward artificial-life models in which simple components interacting locally give rise to emergent complexity. This untitled sheet dates from the period of his doctoral research at the University of Plymouth (2005–2009; the degree came in 2010) on interactive, emergent machine behavior. Beyls describes his method as 'conceptual navigation,' regarding the computer as an active partner in the creative process while insisting on the plotter's translation of digital process into a tangible, physical trace.

Acquired from DAM Gallery, Berlin, in March 2018; Wolf Lieser's invoice lists it simply as "No title, plotter drawing… (the black squares one I left with you)."
