Description
From Ordo, a series of 276 works Csuri assembled in 2017 out of files on his own computer — six decades of experiment with line, form, colour and space gathered into a single long-form generative work.
The image is built with two tools Csuri wrote himself. His Ribbon tool generates brushstroke-like ribbons and strings that wind through transparent three-dimensional volumes; his Color Mix tool shifts hue according to how those ribbons sit relative to one another in space. What comes out keeps the concerns of the painter he trained as: layered line, graded colour, cast shadow, and the chiaroscuro he had studied in Cézanne — produced here by code and light instead of pigment.
The series also records how he worked. Csuri set the parameters, watched what the program returned, and chose which results to keep, deliberately leaving room for what he called the "element of surprise". A pioneer of computer art and animation who began working with computers in the 1960s, he treated the machine as a medium to be argued with rather than obeyed.
