Description
A plotter drawing in ink on paper: one boulder sitting in deep grass. The grass is thousands of short flicked strokes in green, dense enough at the horizon to read as a field and thinning to isolated blades at the bottom edge. The stone is built from black hatching so tightly packed it goes nearly solid on its shaded side, leaving the lit face almost bare — the paper itself doing the work of light.
Behind both, the sky is not drawn so much as transmitted. Row after row of a square wave runs across the upper third in pale grey, the plotter's own signal made visible, the rows breaking up and falling away as they approach the horizon. It is the one passage that makes no attempt to look natural, and it is what holds the picture together: a machine gesture standing in for weather.
Signed lower right, M. Roland, and numbered #1/50 VE. The VE is the point: a variable edition, so each of the fifty is plotted as its own run rather than printed identically from one master.
