Zach Lieberman

b. 1977

Zach Lieberman (b. 1977) is one of the people who built the room that computational art happens in: co-creator of openFrameworks, the open-source C++ toolkit (with Theo Watson and Arturo Castro), co-founder of New York's School for Poetic Computation (2013), and leader of the Future Sketches group at the MIT Media Lab. Zach and I were paired for Rhizome's Seven on Seven at the New Museum in 2011, where we 3D-filmed people in the park and played the captures back as a "Princess Leia"-style projection. Since New Year's Day 2016 he has made a sketch in code nearly every day, and the blobs that emerged became a signature — "I have a sort of blob obsession," he admits. That daily practice of conjuring beautiful images from shaders, color, light, and shadow inspires not just me but everyone he encounters. M+ in Hong Kong commissioned Atlas of Blobs in 2022; Unit London mounted Circles, Blobs, Ripples in 2024. The prints in this collection come straight from the daily practice: giclée, full bleed, on 330-gram matte paper.
