The Bre Pettis Collection of Computer Art

Yoshiyuki Abe

Japanese

Japanese artist, born in Gunma and raised in Saitama. He graduated in photographic engineering from Chiba University in 1972 and worked for about a decade in photography and video before turning to computer graphics in 1983, writing his own system and graphics software. Frustrated by the limits of photographing physical objects, he set out to make images that could not be photographed at all, and from the late 1980s moved away from modelling toward purely algorithmic image-making. His series include LEGEND (1992), LS (1993), FLOW (1996) and STOCHASTICA. Honoured at Prix Ars Electronica in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
