Portrait of William Mapan

William Mapan

French · b. 1988

William Mapan is a French generative artist, creative coder, and teacher based in Paris. Born in 1988, he studied computer science and visual arts at Gobelins, where he now teaches creative coding and generative art. His practice combines traditional art methods with programming, using code as a way to extend hand drawing, mark-making, pigment, light, and texture into digital systems. Mapan is known for works that make algorithmic images feel tactile, painterly, and emotionally personal. His process often begins with sketches and graphical experiments, which he then translates into generative algorithms. Important series include Dragons, Anticyclone, Sketchbook A&B, and Distance, the latter created in connection with LACMA’s Remembrance of Things Future project. His work sits in the space between software, abstraction, painting, and the human gesture.
