Wendy Carlos

Wendy Carlos (b. 1939) made the synthesizer mainstream: Switched-On Bach (Columbia Masterworks, October 1968), recorded with producer Rachel Elkind and Robert Moog advising, hit the Billboard top ten, took three Grammys, and went platinum — not the first Moog record (Perrey and Kingsley got there earlier) but the first hit. The Well-Tempered Synthesizer followed in 1969: Scarlatti, Monteverdi, Handel, more Bach. Original sleeves carry her pre-transition credit; she is Wendy. Later came A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Tron.
