Vuk Ćosić
Vuk Ćosić (b. 1966, Belgrade) is a Slovenian artist who took a BA in archaeology from the University of Belgrade in 1991 and then went digging in a newer ruin: the early web. A central figure of net.art, he co-founded the nettime, Syndicate, and 7-11 mailing lists and the Ljubljana Digital Media Lab (Ljudmila), and in 1997 made Documenta: Done by copying the entire documenta X website and keeping it online after its organizers announced they would take it down — art as an act of preservation and mild theft. From 1996 he wrote his own software to convert images and film into ASCII characters, the practice he is best known for: Deep ASCII, which replays a scene from Deep Throat in typographic characters; ASCII History of Moving Images (1998), which does the same for Psycho and other landmarks; ASCII Unreal; History of Art for the Blind; and the Instant ASCII Camera. He has shown at the Venice Biennale, the Montreal Biennale, and the ZKM, now describes himself as a "retired net.art pioneer," and teaches in the media studies department at the University of Ljubljana.
