Travess Smalley

Travess Smalley (b. 1986, Huntington) works the seam between screen and paper. He took an MFA in Digital + Media at the Rhode Island School of Design, teaches print media at the University of Rhode Island, and describes his method as a feedback loop: print a digital image, work into it by hand, scan it back, edit it in software, print it again. The output has taken the form of pen-plotter drawings — subtle monochrome abstractions built from repetition and its interruptions — as well as modded Minecraft assets, NFTs, a playable Game Boy cartridge holding an interactive slideshow essay, and a set of six unique handwoven rugs made from his Pixel Rug images, which work through pixel art, dithering and anti-aliasing. He lives in New York and is represented by Foxy Production.
