Simon Kirby
Simon Kirby is Professor of Language Evolution at the University of Edinburgh, where he heads the Centre for Language Evolution and studies how culture transmits and reshapes human behaviour — and he makes plotter drawings out of the same interest in what accumulates over many small iterations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the British Academy, and his collaborative installation Cybraphon won a BAFTA in 2009 and entered the permanent collection of the National Museum of Scotland. His drawings are made with ordinary office ballpoint refills held in a plotter, with elastic bands setting the pressure on the paper; rather than placing lines himself he writes the code that moves the arm, and a single work can run to over a million drawn lines.
