Roy Neal

Roy Neal (1921–2003), born Roy Neal Hinkel in Philadelphia, was NBC's space correspondent through the whole first era of American spaceflight. He joined the network in 1948 and stayed thirty-eight years as correspondent, producer and executive, covering every Mercury mission and then Gemini, Apollo and the early Space Shuttle flights. He reported live on the Apollo 11 landing, served as the pool reporter for all three major networks during the Apollo 13 crisis, and was on air for STS-1. His Apollo 11 newscast was itself issued on an LP — the kind of record this shelf collects, where the document of a machine's achievement becomes an object you can play.
