The Bre Pettis Collection of Computer Art

Robert Tinney

American · 1947–2026

Robert Tinney (1947–2026) painted the personal computer revolution before it could photograph itself: more than a hundred BYTE magazine covers from December 1975 to the fifteenth-anniversary issue of September 1990, airbrush and acrylic metaphors — chip cities, silicon landscapes, robot dreams — that gave an abstract industry its imagery. Born in Penn Yan, New York, and raised in Baton Rouge, he later sold signed, strictly limited editions of the cover paintings through Tinney Graphics, plates destroyed after each run. He died in Louisiana in February 2026; the estate keeps tinney.net and the prints alive.
