Paul DeMarinis
Paul DeMarinis (b. 1948) took his MFA under Robert Ashley and Terry Riley at Mills College and became one of sound art's great tinkerers — Ars Electronica Golden Nica winner (2006) for The Messenger, professor of art at Stanford. Songs Without Throats (Black Truffle, 2019) collects his synthetic-speech songcraft of 1978–95: a hacked Speak & Spell, his homebuilt Pygmy Gamelan, machines singing without throats.
