Nima Nabavi

Nima Nabavi (b. 1978, Iran) has become a good friend. He's lived in Dubai, LA, and Brooklyn, shows with The Third Line gallery in Dubai, and carries a family thread: his grandfather was a master geometric artist in Iran for over fifty years. Nima made his name doing geometry the hard way — ruler, pens, and patience — including one large artwork that had him spending a year on the floor, on his hands and knees, with a ruler and markers. That's what brought him to us: a person who draws like that deserves a machine. His practice explores geometric abstraction's connection to the natural world, quantum processes, and psychedelic phenomena — grid-based compositions of elaborately layered ordered forms, built on advanced planning and precise calculation. His work now moves between hand and plotter, and for a show at the Bantam Tools Machine Arts Gallery he built a magnetic composition — pixel tiles the viewer can rearrange. Selected solo exhibitions: Sunrise at the Vortex (Dubai, 2025), Visiting at the Roswell Museum (New Mexico, 2023), and 1,2,3 at The Third Line (Dubai, 2018); his work is held by the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art in Roswell, the Deutsche Bank Collection, and the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai.
