Muntadas
Antoni Muntadas (born 1942, Barcelona) is a Catalan multidisciplinary installation and media artist who has lived in New York since 1971. He studied at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales in Barcelona and at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York. An early pioneer of video and installation in the mid-1970s, Muntadas works across photography, video, installation, audio and urban intervention. His subject is the infrastructure of communication itself — the relationship between public and private space, and the channels through which information is censored, framed or promulgated. He signs his work with the single name Muntadas. Principal projects include 'Between the Frames: The Forum' (1983–93), 'The Board Room' (1985), 'The File Room' (1994) — an early web-based archive of cultural censorship, and one of the first artworks conceived natively for the internet — and the ongoing series 'On Translation' (1995– ) and 'The Construction of Fear' (2008– ). He has received awards from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, Ars Electronica in Linz, the Laser d'Or in Locarno, and the Premi Nacional d'Arts Plàstiques de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
