Martin Bauer
Martin Bauer and I met in December 2007 and were fast friends — we made calendars together by laser-engraving our thumbnails (the proof lives on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bre/2131807572/). A Berlin-based artist who makes abstract work with industrial machinery and abused laser cutters, Martin dug deep into plotting with me when he visited in the winter of 2019–2020 and we got a bunch of 1980s HP plotters up and running at my house — the visit that ignited our shared passion for making art with plotters. His own work and his work with MMACHINE (his duo with Maj Mlakar, now exhibiting as Bauer/Mlakar) are inspiring, straddling chaos and design: rigid mechanical movement turned into fluid, expressive gesture.
