Irving John Good

Irving John Good (born London, 1916) received his PhD in mathematics from Cambridge in 1941 and was one of four people who helped design the first large-scale electronic digital computer during his wartime work with the Foreign Office (alongside Turing at Bletchley Park). He held posts at Manchester, Princeton, and Trinity College Oxford's Atlas Computer Laboratory, becoming Research Professor of Statistics at Virginia Polytechnic. Author of Probability and the Weighing of Evidence (1950), his interests spanned statistical inference and machine intelligence. A contributor to Jasia Reichardt's Cybernetics, Art and Ideas (1971).
