Ian W. Giles

Ian W. Giles is a creative technologist studying human-computer interaction and art at Carnegie Mellon, building "systems and tools designed to be used in creative ways." His plotter work runs in Python and vsketch along two threads: atypographic drawings that encode letters as angles so a whole phrase becomes one continuous line — readable, he notes, with a protractor — and generative knots and braids, permutation-tiled strands that his code deliberately breaks and tangles. He showed with Golan Levin's Drawing with Machines studio at the Bantam Tools Machine Arts Gallery in Peekskill in January 2026. His work looks like lace to me. Beautiful.
