Henry Horenstein

Henry Horenstein (b. 1947, New Bedford, Massachusetts) taught half of America to print a photograph: his Black and White Photography: A Basic Manual (1974) has been the darkroom bible through umpteen editions, one thread of the more than thirty-five books he's produced while professing photography at RISD — where he himself trained under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind, after studying history at the University of Chicago. The pictures run from honky-tonk portraits of country musicians to racetracks and burlesque; the Getty, the Smithsonian, and Duke hold his prints, and lately he makes documentary films too.
