François Morellet
French · b. 1926
French painter, sculptor and light artist (1926–2016), born in Cholet. He was a founding member of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) in 1960 and a close friend and collaborator of Vera and François Molnar from 1957. He was one of the first artists to make chance and system the subject of the work: in Random Distribution of Triangles According to Odd and Even Numbers from a Telephone Directory, the digits of a phone book decide where each triangle goes. Barbara Nierhoff's essay in Vintage Galéria's 2018 Molnár catalogue sets his "uninfluenced" chance against Molnár's guided chance.
