Donald Michie

1923–2007

Donald Michie (born 1923) worked with Newman, Good, Turing and others on wartime codebreaking computers before taking a biological career at Oxford (DPhil 1952, mammalian genetics). Turning to machine intelligence, he founded the Experimental Programming Unit at Edinburgh in 1965 and helped establish its Department of Machine Intelligence and Perception, becoming a leading figure in British AI. A contributor to Jasia Reichardt's Cybernetics, Art and Ideas (1971).
