Dennis Gabor
1900–1979
Dennis Gabor, CBE, FRS (born Hungary, 1900) was an electrical engineer, physicist and inventor, best known for inventing holography — photography with coherent (laser) light — in 1948 while a research engineer at British Thomson-Houston, Rugby. From 1949 he taught at Imperial College, London, becoming Professor of Applied Electron Physics in 1958. His later books Inventing the Future (1963) and Innovations (1970) turned from technology to the social problems he feared would bring civilization to crisis. A contributor to Jasia Reichardt's Cybernetics, Art and Ideas (1971).
