Daniel Calderon Arenas

Daniel Calderon Arenas — DCA — is a Houston generative artist and educator whose Genesis was literally the genesis: written in 2017 as the proof-of-concept for Art Blocks, the platform his brother Erick "Snowfro" Calderon founded, and released as one of its three launch projects. He took his MFA at the University of Houston in 2020 and has taught coding-as-art there; his work runs from the Gen trilogy through Marfa Yucca (a Judd nod for Art Blocks Explorations) to Bosque de Chapultepec for Bright Moments Mexico City, reinterpreting his grandfather's painting of the park where he grew up eating Garibaldi pastries. Really Random Rock (2022) brought it all to Plottables: algorithmic scholars' rocks designed expressly to be drawn in ink. I am very fond of rocks, and Daniel's rocks are delightful. I lost one of the Really Random Rocks in an NFT theft — it made me deeply sad — so I was happy to acquire the one I have now in a charity auction.
