Bruce Lacey

Bruce Lacey (1927–2016) was Britain's great electromechanical eccentric: Hornsey and the Royal College, then The Alberts and their West End revue An Evening of British Rubbish (1963), props for Richard Lester, the flute-playing gardener in the Beatles' Help! — and, crucially for this collection, the robots. His radio-controlled R.O.S.A. BOSOM and MATE performed at Cybernetic Serendipity at the ICA in 1968, machine art before the machines had computers in them; Fairport Convention put his robots' noises on a record. The Lacey Rituals (1972) filmed his family's daily life as ceremony; the Tate holds three works; Camden Arts Centre gave him The Bruce Lacey Experience in 2012.
