Angelica "Angie" Bonilla Fominaya — A. B. Fominaya on the work — is a proud Colombian artist and roboticist in Pittsburgh: a PhD student in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute Textiles Lab, advised by James McCann, working on actuated knits, sensing, and co-creative robots. What hooks me is how she connects knitting machines to her personal history and to the places she's from — the machine becomes a way of carrying memory and geography into fabric. I've had the chance to meet her, and the work runs as deep in person as it does on the page. She's also on the team that figured out solid knitting: a SIGGRAPH 2024 paper (with Yuichi Hirose, Mark Gillespie, and James McCann) demonstrating a machine that knits dense, solid 3D objects layer by layer — 3D printing's volumetric logic built from topologically entwined stitches (https://textiles.cs.cmu.edu/publications/2024-solid-knitting/). Her art moves between machine knitting, pen plotters, and collaborative robot arms; her mural In the Footsteps of a Stranger, made with plotter and embroidery-software techniques, hangs in CMU's Posner Hall, and her work has shown at the Miller ICA senior exhibition (2023) and the Drawing with Machines show at the Bantam Tools Machine Arts Gallery in Peekskill (January 2026).
